Paul George diverges from Carmelo Anthony with strong take on Duke Blue Devils basketball star Cooper Flagg

Cooper Flagg is all but set to join the Dallas Mavericks in the 2025 NBA Draft. The Mavs have the No. 1 pick, and Flagg has been regarded as one of the most surefire top picks in recent memory.

In a recent episode of his podcast, Paul George had great things to say about Flagg. The nine-time All-Star praised the Duke basketball phenom for his sky-high potential.

"I think he's going to be an All-Star,” George said. “When it's all said and done, I think he's going to go down as one of the best players our league has seen. He's got that talent.”

George’s comments mirror those of many other current and former players, as well as most basketball analysts. Flagg’s all-around skill set is undeniable, and anything but a No. 1 selection on June 25 for the former Blue Devil would shock the sports world.

2025 Hall of Fame inductee Carmelo Anthony joined Podcast P on the episode and offered some interesting analysis of Flagg’s game. While impressed by Flagg’s body of work so far, Anthony is skeptical about how high the projected No. 1 pick’s ceiling truly is.

“To me, he doesn’t do anything great. He just does a lot of sh-t very good,” Anthony said. “I’m a fan of him, but we’ve got to talk to him as a pro now. Now you’re stepping into where this is every single night. The way the players are head-hunting today … he’s gonna be tested with that. I’m a fan, but I wanna see him against (the best players).”

While Anthony believes in Flagg’s overall abilities, he doubts whether the Duke icon has a ‘go-to’ move in his arsenal. The former New York Knicks legend pointed to Flagg’s documented late-game struggles with turnovers and missed shots during his biggest freshman-year battles as evidence for his lack of a developed go-to move.

Like many players, fans, and analysts, George and Anthony have differing viewpoints on Flagg’s potential trajectory. However, that shouldn’t stop the Mavs from drafting the reigning Naismith Player of the Year without hesitation.
