Paul Finebaum names a frontrunner early in Auburn's coaching search

Paul Finebaum believes Auburn should tap into its roots for the next head football coach following the firing of Hugh Freeze.

During an appearance Monday on McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning, the longtime ESPN commentator said Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall should be at the top of Auburn’s list.

“The name I think is most intriguing is Jon Sumrall,” Finebaum said. “He’s hard-nosed. He’ll remind some people of Pat Dye, which is never a bad way to go if you’re trying to identify who the next Auburn football coach should be.”

Sumrall had deep ties to the SEC. The Huntsville, Alabama native has built one of the most consistent Group of Five programs in the country. After leading Troy to back-to-back Sun Belt championships, he took over at Tulane and guided the Green Wave to another conference title game appearance. His team remained in the College Football Playoff conversation until last week's loss to UTSA. 

Sumrall built a reputation as a physical, detail-oriented leader, which could resonate on The Plains. Especially given the fact Auburn needs some who can turn the program back into a contender at a critical time. 

“He knows this state and he knows what Auburn is about,” Finebaum said. “I wouldn’t just try to hire the hot name. I’d hire someone who can connect with that fan base.”

Sumrall’s success has already drawn interest from multiple Power Four programs, including LSU. Finebaum said Auburn would have to “move quickly” if it wants to secure him before other schools make a push to do the same.
