Multi award-winning cartoonist Paul Chadwick‘s signature creation Concrete returns for the first time in over a decade for new story Stars Over Sand. The five-issue Dark Horse miniseries will begin June 16, 2026.
Begun in 1986, Concrete is a fascinating series about a man whose mind is trapped in a hulking stone body. A bizarre yet heart-breakingly human series, the last Concrete adventure was 2012’s one-shot Three Uneasy Pieces.
The synopsis for Concrete: Stars Over Sand:
“Concrete has entered the desert and not come back. Larry and Maureen are frantic. Reports come that he is wandering the nearby arid mountains, covered with blood, attacking people. Concrete, lightning-struck, confused, roams a frightening world he can’t understand. Roars tear across the sky. A strange globe rises. His body is sheathed in stone. He thinks he is being hunted. People are a threat.
“His journey back to life, and his friends’ dire search against a looming deadline, is as strange and tense as any Concrete story ever told.”
The announcement of Concrete: Stars Over Sand coincides with a wave of activity over at Dark Horse as the publisher celebrates 40 years in the industry.
Stars Over Sand has been in gestation for quite a while. Paul Chadwick had stated he had begun working on it in 2015, even declaring the title, via an interview on Dark Horse’s YouTube channel series Panel Surfing. This Chadwick openly admits:
“A decade’s work, more or less. [The] covers are wraparound oil paintings; it’s set in places I’ve camped and sketched; I’ve lived, briefly, Concrete’s affliction. Everything I know about suspense I’ve tried to do here.”
Although it has been more than a decade since we last saw our stone hero, his creator hasn’t been entirely off radar – in 2017 he released a graphic novel written by Dark Horse founder Mike Richardson called Best Wishes.
