Patriots make $80 million pivot to Romeo Doubs after stalled attempts at receivers

The Patriots, for now, have settled for Option C at receiver.

With no A.J. Brown trade completed and after striking out on Alec Pierce, New England pivoted to Romeo Doubs and the parties agreed on a four-year deal worth with a base of $68 million that can max at $80 million, according to Sports Illustrated.

Doubs is heading to Foxborough after posting a career-best 724 yards this past year with the Packers, and the 25-year-old certainly provides upside.

He never posted gaudy numbers with Green Bay, though, due to the offense’s spread-it-out nature that often resulted in a different leading receiver each game.

Doubs will have a chance to establish himself as the top option for New England star quarterback Drake Maye, and the lingering question is whether the Patriots will continue big-game hunting.

The Patriots have been linked to Brown this offseason and report indicated they are the top potential trade candidate, yet Brown remains an Eagle for the time being.

A deal could come to fruition at any time, but the Patriots made a sizable investment — $17.5 million average annual value — to land Doubs.

New England had also been linked to Pierce, the emerging Colts receiver, who opted to stay put after after agreeing to a four-year, $116 million deal.

Instead of landing an alpha receiver, the Doubs move could perhaps be the start of New England attempting to make over its receiving room with second-tier options.

The Patriots cut Stefon Diggs earlier this season despite topping 1,000 yards in his first season with the franchise and cleared $16.8 million in cap space.

That money essentially went to Doubs, but the Patriots have also made another notable free agent investment in former Jets guard Alijah Vera-Tucker.

Tucker reportedly will sign a three-year deal worth $42 million that can max at $48 million, per ESPN.

Doubs comes to New England with 202 career catches for 2,424 yards and 21 touchdowns after being selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
