Patriots-Eagles trade rumor gives update on A.J. Brown talks after Romeo Doubs signing

1 hour ago 2

The New England Patriots made a splash signing in free agency by adding Romeo Doubs on a three-year deal, which complicates the team's pursuit of Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown.

It's pretty clear that the Patriots were targeting Brown in a trade, and apparently, New England was very close to pulling off a trade for the star playmaker.

According to Easton Butler of Packer Report, the Patriots and Eagles were in discussions about a trade for Brown since last week, and talks intensified over the weekend before stalling on Sunday night.

"The Patriots and Eagles were in discussions about a potential trade for WR AJ Brown since last week, per sources. Trade talk picked up over the weekend, with the Patriots reportedly offering a 1st for the star, and Philly wanting more. Sunday night, trade talks stalled, and have been at a standstill since. The Patriots since signed WR Romeo Doubs today," Butler said.

Butler added that trade talks have died down significantly, especially with New England signing Doubs.

"Idk, trade talks have died down heavily since," Butler said of New England's chances of trading for Brown.

Doubs joining the Patriots definitely decreases the odds of the Patriots acquiring Brown, but it's still not out of the realm of possibilities.

New England still has a need for a No. 1 receiver, as Doubs hasn't shown he can take on that role in his career. Brown would be a seamless fit with the Patriots, and his connection to head coach Mike Vrabel due to their days with the Tennessee Titans makes him a logical trade target for New England.

We'll see if the Patriots can still pull off a deal for Brown, but the addition of Doubs and the latest update aren't great news.
