Patrick Mahomes reveals why Chiefs no longer NFL's close game kings

2 hours ago 3

Last season, the Kansas City Chiefs were bulletproof in one-score games, with Patrick Mahomes and Co. having a 12-0 record (including playoffs).

Now, we know that the law of averages would say that this type of winning isn't sustainable, given how unpredictable the NFL is, and through the first five games of 2025, the football gods haven't had the same feeling towards the Chiefs.

Sitting at 2-3, all three of the Chiefs' losses have been by one score.

Bulletproof no more?

Mahomes has offered a little insight into why Kansas City continues to fall short in big moments.

“Pretty much execution, just little things here and there,” Mahomes said. “We're just not making winning football plays in certain moments. It goes down to the interception in the red zone that I throw, that's a 14-point swing.

"I feel like we've played better these last few weeks, but in this league, it's going to come down to one-score games, that's what coach Reid preaches, and it's about who executes at a higher level, and we haven't done that as a team throughout these first five, six weeks.”

Chiefs still alive in AFC West hunt

Currently third in the division, the Chiefs, at 2-3, are behind the 3-2 Denver Broncos and the 3-2 Los Angeles Chargers. Although the gap is not huge, L.A. does hold the tiebreaker over Kansas City at the time of writing.

With the Detroit Lions up next, Kansas City, particularly at home, will want to get back on the winners' list against Dan Campbell's team, and also to keep pace with the Broncos (have Jets) and the Chargers (vs. Miami) as well.

The offense feels to be in a better spot than in previous weeks, and had there not been as many self-inflicted wounds, the Chiefs might have escaped Jacksonville with a win.

But alas, at 2-3, their season is very much alive, but there are still four games to go before Kansas City tackles the Broncos in Week 11. So, Reid's team will want to still be in striking distance.
