Patrick Mahomes had 1-emoji reaction to Chiefs draft pick, trade

The Kansas City Chiefs may not have won the Super Bowl, but they still found themselves picking with the last selection of the first round in the NFL Draft.

The Chiefs traded the 31st overall pick to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for the 32nd pick and the 164th pick. The Eagles selected University of Alabama Linebacker Jihaad Campbell.

After the Chiefs traded back one spot, their quarterback, like everybody else, was tuned in to see what the Chiefs did. The Chiefs made a somewhat obvious selection by taking Josh Simmons, an offensive tackle. Just after the trade and moments before the Chiefs had their pick announced by the commissioner, Patrick Mahomes sent out a single emoji on X: A smiling face with sunglasses on.

Mahomes' tweet clearly expressed his pleasure in the Chiefs' selection. The Chiefs ended the season with All-Pro guard Joe Thuney playing left tackle. However, he was traded to the Chicago Bears. The Chiefs have long needed a franchise left tackle, and may have found one in Simmons.

Simmons suffered a knee injury in October, which is likely why he slid to the Chiefs. However, in 2023, he allowed just one sack. When he is cleared to take the field again, he can be a contributor.

The Chiefs signed Jaylon Moore this offseason, presumably to play left tackle. Simmons has the versatility to play elsewhere, but the Chiefs may even be okay with keeping him sidelined this year while he recovers, allowing Moore to protect Mahomes' blindside.

After the Eagles dismantled the Chiefs' offense with a pass rush in the Super Bowl, it was safe to assume the team would select an offensive lineman.
