Typically presented as a sports media outsider who nestled his way onto one of the industry's highest perches, Pat McAfee has almost certainly had to get used to being the butt of jokes in certain circles across his broadcasting career.

In some ways, he seems to embrace the controversy. It was McAfee who would give Aaron Rodgers the platform to direct barbs at a host of subjects, including Anthony Fauci, on his podcast. McAfee also famously called Caitlin Clark a "white b—" in 2024, another controversy that drew the ire of segments of the sports landscape.

And yet, the former NFL player persists, finding a niche and seemingly embracing it since his retirement. His niche appears to have proven financially viable — for both himself and his ESPN employers. Still, McAfee is liable for an outburst or two, especially when confronted with all he has wrought.

With that, here's a breakdown of McAfee's ongoing spat with Utah supporters, a conflict that drew eyeballs during Saturday's "College GameDay" broadcast.

Pat McAfee-Utah fans beef, explained

McAfee has made a habit out of bucking at those who he perceives as rooting for his downfall. Prior spats with Washington State and Georgia supporters showed that all might not be well within the "College GameDay" perch, at least as far as its star analyst is concerned.

The punter-turned-podcaster has tended to keep his vitriol for certain fanbases off the airwaves in recent weeks. However, he couldn't help but dig his knife into a Utes fanbase that pooled into Salt Lake City to watch the college football staple before their high-profile clash with Houston.

McAfee employed his typical shtick when making he decision, wavering until the very last second before siding with the Cougars.

“It’s hard to pick against this mighty Utah student section, but I’m gonna do it ten times out of ten," McAfee said. "Give me Houston coming out of here with a big-time dub and proving that Utah hasn’t had to play anybody yet. They’re going to get a little bit of a struggle, and then maybe they get better down the stretch. Congrats to Houston getting a huge win here in Salt Lake City."

McAfee then proclaimed that he is never planning on making a trek to Utah's venerable home again.

“Thank you, guys. I’ll never see you again, hopefully," McAfee said.

Pat McAfee has awkward exchange with kicking contest contestant

McAfee cited a tense interaction he had with the person selected to do the kicking raffle as one of the reasons for his adversarial view of the Utes' campus. A contestant for "College GameDay's" kicking contest expressed disappointment over the sum of her potential winnings, noting BYU's iteration of the competition — which took place last week — featured a $3 million prize instead of the $1 million she was presented with.

McAfee noted that BYU's competition was bankrolled in part by a pair of billionaire BYU donors.

"Actually, how about $20," McAfee quipped.

This kick will be for ONE MILLION DOLLARS.. I HOPE MORGAN MAKES IT NO GOOD #CollegeGameDay https://t.co/0uDIpYIeCD

The contestant went on to miss the kick, sparing McAfee the indignity of having to shell out a check to someone he was less than enthused to interact with. Nevertheless, the frostiness of the exchange was immediately evident to those who watched it unfold.

Utah football account makes instagram post mocking Pat McAfee

McAfee also referenced a video posted by "the university's Instagram account" as reason for some of his rancor. The video in question, shared by the Utah Student Experience and the official University of Utah account, saw students mock McAfee's behavior and mannerisms while camping out on the lawn ahead of Saturday morning's broadcast.

Like the kicking contestant's comments towards McAfee, the "roasting" appeared to be benign, especially when considering McAfee's caricature-like behavior while traipsed along the "College GameDay" set.

Nevertheless, it seems McAfee was left with a bruised ego as a result of Utes supporters' insolence. We'll see if that affects the future of the program traveling to Utah going forward.
