Pat McAfee discusses polarizing Patriot Games appearance alongside Donald Trump

Pat McAfee made himself the subject of scrutiny on Tuesday evening. The ESPN star, renowned for his boorish commentary on sports, appeared alongside Donald Trump at the inaugural Patriot Games, sending the internet into a frenzy.

McAfee, a frat-boy-like figure who has climbed the sports broadcast ladder in recent years, was seen chumming around in the president's section for much of the festival, itself a component of Trump's Freedom 250 sports package.

Predictably, McAfee's embrace of the contentious politician had some onlookers less than pleased. McAfee responded to criticism over his decision to rub shoulders with Trump on Wednesday.

McAfee addressed his appearance next to Trump at the final round of the Patriot Games, a competition that pitted high schoolers from across the U.S. against one another for a $250,000 scholarship prize pool as part of the Trump administration's Freedom 250 initiative.

Speaking on his show Wednesday, McAfee defended his decision to attend the event alongside Trump.

“I think this is an initiative that is going to continue. I think this is a big deal,” McAfee said. “And anything that is going to amplify or encourage the next generation to remain active and competitive, I think that is a huge thing I will be a part of.”

McAfee greeted Trump when Air Force One touched down in Cleveland and joined him for a walkout before sitting beside him as the action began. He wasn't the only member of ESPN brass in attendance; executives from the network and parent company Disney also filed alongside Trump to watch the festivities unfold.

The punter-turned-pundit routinely used to side-step politics on his platform, revealing that he turned down the opportunity to interview Trump and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential election. After Aaron Rodgers attempted to link ABC star Jimmy Kimmel with notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, McAfee appeared content to leave the topic of politics alone altogether.

“I haven’t polled our crowd, but I’m rather certain that nobody’s wanting to come hang out with us to hear us talk about politics,” McAfee said at the time “I think it’s probably a massive reason for our success actually.”

McAfee appears to have gone back on his word in recent years, regularly making mention of political issues.

“I do appreciate how people feel towards their politics and everything else; I do respect it,” McAfee said. “But there’s some absurd things when it’s like, it’s not just me.

“We’re trying to create something here for the next generation. We’re trying to give back from our community and our world, sports and fitness. Once this thing settles in and this Patriot Games thing goes for ten, 20 years, which I’m hoping happens no matter who’s president, I think this will be something that we look back and say, ‘This was inevitably good.'”

What are the Patriot Games?

The Patriot Games refer to a competition authored by Trump administration as part of Freedom 250. Each state and territory sent one boy and one girl to the event. All participants are between the ages of 14 and 17. with events ranging from a military-style boot camp to an obstacle course.

Transgender children were barred from competing. The Washington Post reported that 90 percent of the competition' participants were white.

“It’s a little startling,” one White athlete told the Post. “This is supposed to be the best high school athletes. … It just feels a little concerning not to see very many different types of people.”

ESPN carries the broadcast rights to the competition and has been airing events on the ESPN+ app. However, the network has offered little to no promotion of the event on air.

McAfee has a lengthy history of fraternizing with Trump. Last November, he conducted a live interview with Trump during a Veterans Day broadcast. McAfee also got direct approval from Trump to broadcast live from the White House during the UFC's Freedom 250 card.

Their burgeoning relationship comes in light of ESPN's apparent relaxing of rules regarding the encroachment of politics into sports. ESPN and Disney heads Jimmy Pitaro and Josh D'Amaro were also in attendance for Tuesday's event, which took place in the sleepy town of Geneva, Ohio. At one point in its history, the "worldwide" leader discouraged employees from dipping their toes into the world of politics, per The Guardian's Andrew Lawrence.

That doesn't appear to be the case any longer.
