Under new head coach Sean Sweeney, the Orlando Magic have made a big change with their system. However, it seems that the results have not been good so far because they have lost their first two games of the 2026-27 NBA season.
In addition to those defeats, they have already been dealt a huge blow. Star forward Paolo Banchero will miss the next four to six weeks with a right high ankle sprain, ESPN's Shams Charania reports.
Paolo Banchero's latest injury could ruin the Magic's 2026-27 season
Banchero had a promising start to the season, as he scored 35 points in the Magic's close loss to the Atlanta Hawks in the season opener. He even showed that he had a feisty attitude about him because he had a scuffle with Jalen Johnson.
Unfortunately for Banchero, he had to leave the Magic's second game of the season against the Minnesota Timberwolves early. He suffered his high ankle sprain in the first half of that game, and now he will be out for at least a month.

The Magic will now have to make adjustments to the team. Of course, it will be Franz Wagner who will pick up the slack. He is Banchero's co-star after all, but he will need to keep them afloat while Banchero is on the sidelines.
This is unfamiliar territory for Banchero because it is a different kind of ankle injury than the ones he has experienced in the past.
"Most of all my ankle sprains have always been to the outside, so this is kind of foreign to me. So, a little scary in that way," Banchero said to Jason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel about his injury.
If he can recover quickly, this won't be much of an issue. However, if Banchero has to deal with the maximum timeframe for his recovery, that might be trouble for coach Sweeney and the rest of the Magic organization.
