The Florida Panthers won back-to-back Stanley Cups, but then they missed the playoffs.
That fall-off in 2025-26 could actually be pivotal to what comes next for the Panthers, though, because it gives them a great asset to use in a potential trade for Dylan Larkin.
Larkin has requested a trade from the Detroit Red Wings, and he reportedly has interest in going to just three teams: the Panthers, the Minnesota Wild and the Vegas Golden Knights.
Because Larkin has a no-movement clause, he is still somewhat in control of his destiny. The Red Wings, though, would have to get an offer they like from one of his desired teams to actually go for it.
The Panthers, because they had a bad season, have the No. 9 overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. Normally, they'd pick near the back end. But with that selection, they'll have a chance.
Ideas are already circulating for trades involving those three teams, and only the Panthers have a top-10 pick on offer:

The Golden Knights are currently playing in the Stanley Cup Final, and while getting Larkin would be immense, they're also operating without a ton of cap flexibility.
The Wild still have some young talent, but coming off a playoff season, their draft assets aren't as appealing.
It'll really come down to what the Red Wings are seeking, because each of those three teams has a bit of a different package to offer.
Only the Panthers can trade the No. 9 pick, though, and that's thanks to the tough season they just had.
