Palm Springs homeowner bursts into tears after squatters trick best friend before burning down house

A California homeowner burst into tears while talking about the destruction of his Palm Springs house, claiming the blaze was linked to squatters.

Mark Chaffins, who has been displaced by the fire, described losing the property and the events that he believes led up to the disaster.

While investigators have not determined the cause of the fire, Chaffins alleges squatters had moved in and played a role in what happened, News Channel 3 reported.

According to Chaffins, the individuals gained access to the property after taking advantage of his best friend, allowing them to establish themselves at the residence without permission.

“The story here is about squatters,” Chaffins told Channel 3. “It’s about residents and it’s about understanding how it works here in Riverside County and the reasons why people should be very cautious as to how they proceed with others in the future.”

Chaffins said several people had been staying on the property despite not having authorization to be there.

He also claimed there had been prior disputes involving those individuals and that law enforcement had been called to the property on previous occasions.

Although officials have not publicly linked anyone to the fire, Chaffins believes the people he describes as squatters could be connected to the circumstances surrounding the blaze.

He acknowledged, however, that the investigation remains ongoing and that authorities have not announced a cause.

The fire left Chaffins without a home and searching for answers as investigators work to determine exactly what happened.

Supporters of the homeowner have echoed his concerns, arguing that communities are increasingly struggling to address illegal occupancy and homelessness-related issues.

“All these squatters came in and did this and left an innocent guy with nothing and they’re gone,” Rob Zoller said. “I want to say that our homelessness problem in the city, as with any city, is out of control.”

Authorities have not confirmed any connection between the fire and Chaffins’ allegations. News Channel 3 reported that it had contacted Palm Springs police and fire officials seeking information about the cause of the blaze, the status of the investigation and whether investigators have uncovered any evidence tying the fire to the individuals identified by Chaffins.

For now, the cause of the fire remains under investigation, leaving Chaffins hoping that officials can determine how the blaze started and whether anyone will ultimately be held responsible.
