The St. Louis Cardinals have begun to catch fire again. Winners of five straight, the Cardinals have rebounded after a horrific start to the month, sitting at 42-35, just 4.5 games back of the first-place Chicago Cubs, and one game back of the NL’s third Wild Card spot.
The Cardinals are expected to be one of MLB’s most active teams at the trade deadline. But one thing is for certain, the team’s frontline starting pitchers won’t be involved, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.
“Rival teams would love to get their hands on Cardinals starters Sonny Gray and Miles Mikolas, but they have full no-trade clauses, and have no interest in waiving them,” Nightengale reported.
The 36-year-old Mikolas is 4-4 this season with a 4.35 ERA. He has spent seven seasons with the Cardinals and been named an All-Star in 2018, and in 2022. He has also spent time with the Texas Rangers, San Diego Padres, and even some time in Japan before landing with the Cardinals in 2018.
Gray is 7-2 with a 3.72 ERA, and 90 strikeouts in 84.2 innings of work. He is in his second season with the Cardinals, pitching to a 13-9 record with a 3.84 ERA last season. The former All-Star is under contract through next season. Gray has also pitched for the Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, Cincinnati Reds, and Minnesota Twins before signing with the Cardinals in 2024.
The Cardinals — firmly in the playoff hunt as of now — will have to assess how they will approach the trade deadline, as their is currently no indication that the team will buy or sell next month.
