Padres should be 'excited' about September call-up Ethan Salas

The San Diego Padres are in a back-and-forth battle with the Arizona Diamondbacks for the third and final NL Wild Card spot. 

As of Tuesday morning, the Padres are less than a game behind the D-Backs. 

Prepare yourselves for a tight race down the stretch of the regular season.

At the beginning of September, San Diego promoted top prospect Ethan Salas to help the NL West club finish the regular season strong. 

There's plenty to be excited about with the 20-year-old catcher, The Athletic's Grant Brisbee writes. 

"He hit an unambiguously smashing .326/.410/.539 in 105 plate appearances at Triple-A this season, though, with more walks than strikeouts," Brisbee wrote.

"Those are exciting numbers for a 34-year-old journeyman catcher, much less a 20-year-old prospect. He's still younger than his peers, but he's about to be evaluated based on his production, not his age. The Padres are right to be excited." 

Salas is a strong defensive catcher and can impact the game in other ways besides in the batter's box.

Though he's started his Major League career 0-for-10 with four strikeouts and no walks. The left-handed hitter's struggles are not a suprise given the qulaity of pitching he now finds himself up against. 

Evaluators have raved about Salas for years, and the time has finally come for him to display his talent in the Majors. 

A few strong weeks from the youngster would be an incredibly fun story as the Padres aim for the postseason.
