Padres reportedly reach pre-agreement with 16-year-old prospect who throws over 100 mph

The San Diego Padres have been demolishing their prospect depth over the years, and now, with their blockbuster mid-season trade for Mason Miller, their farm system ranks at the bottom of the league.

But A.J. Preller always finds a way to rebuild the farm system within a few years, and while his drafting helps, the international free agent market is another big area where the organization's depth can improve.

And according to Wilbert Sanchez on Twitter/x, the Padres are reportedly in agreement with Yoel King, a 16-year-old Dominican prospect who can throw above 100 miles per hour.

Padres reportedly have pre-agreement with 16-year-old pitcher who can throw 100 mph

"SOURCE: The San Diego Padres have reached a pre-agreement with Dominican prospect Yoel King," Sanchez shares, "who at just 16 years old already throws over 100 mph. The bonus represents the highest amount ever given to a pitcher in the 2027 class."

King is a fascinating player, as at such a young age, he has one of the fastest pitches in baseball. Throwing over 100 miles per hour is incredibly impressive and something that can make for a superstar prospect.

But what exactly does this mean for the Padres? This "pre-agreement" doesn't actually mean King has signed with the Padres, nor does it mean he's going to sign later.

It's a pre-agreement that's not enforceable, and King could decide not to come to the Padres if he gets a different offer he would prefer to take.

But, even though this isn't official yet, and the Padres will have to wait a while to actually bring him into the organization, there is already a link, and the Padres' chances to finalize this signing in a year are a bit better than those of other teams.

King is the exact kind of prospect the Padres could use to help improve their depleted farm system. But, he cannot join the organization for a while, and still could end up going elsewhere.

While the Padres have to wait a while to finalize this international free agent agreement, this report from Sanchez is a good sign that the Padres will be able to land the 16-year-old who can already throw over 100 mph. This could be a very fun addition, but for now, nothing can be finalized.
