Padres 'remain enamored' of Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran

There have been few player-team connections made in the trade market for as long as the San Diego Padres have been connected to Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Durnan. With a dire need in left field, the Padres' landing an outfielder is a major priority at this year's MLB trade deadline.

It's no surprise that Duran, potentially the top name on the trade block, is someone the Padres are linked to. And in a new article from Dennis Lin in The Athletic, the Padres are still very much interested in trading for Duran.

"According to teams and league sources," Lin writes, "The Padres remain enamored of Jarren Duran, who still might be viewed as expendable by the surging, outfielder-laden Boston Red Sox."

After months of trade rumors, some positive and others negative, the Padres remain steadfast in their interest in the All-Star Red Sox outfielder. Boston has seemingly no indication of trading him, despite the clear ability to do so without hurting the team.

Rarely can a team move on from someone like Duran without drastically hurting the team. But, with Boston's Roman Anthony, Wilyer Abreu, and Ceddane Rafaela in the outfield, losing Duran wouldn't be a big deal.

Their stacked outfield is the only reason why Duran, who isn't having the year he did in 2024, is even potentially available. San Diego will continue to try to make a trade for Duran, especially with the MLB trade deadline less than three weeks away.

In the 2025 season, Duran has a .749 OPS compared to his .834 OPS in 2024. He's regressed offensively and won't set the same marks he did a year ago. But, he's still a valuable outfielder who is under team control through 2028.

Even if it costs a lot, the Padres are trying to pry Duran from the Red Sox organization. While he isn't the ideal fit, as the Padres need more power in the lineup that Duran doesn't provide, he is still a top option among all outfielders on the market.

With the trade deadline rapidly approaching, trade talks between the Padres and the Red Sox should heat up. San Diego has a clear need, and the Red Sox can afford to send Duran away, especially if it nets a strong prospect return.

This is the year for the Padres to go for it, with multiple pitchers set to hit the open market at the end of the year. A.J. Preller and the Padres are still interested in Duran, and seemingly will try to land the outfielder at this year's trade deadline.
