The San Diego Padres solidified their spot in October baseball after Freddy Fermin hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning in their series-opening win against the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday night.

Now that the Padres have clinched a playoff berth, manager Mike Shildt and the team can breathe a sigh of relief in the final week of the regular season.

To make things even better, San Diego reactivated one of their highest-paid players from the injured list on Tuesday.

Padres activate Xander Bogaerts from 10-day IL on Tuesday

The San Diego Padres decided to give a majority of their top talent a day off after receiving their postseason ticket. Players that won't be season in Tuesday's game against the Brewers are 3B Manny Machado, 2B Jake Cronenworth, OF Jackson Merrill, and OF Fernando Tatis Jr.

On the bright side, the Padres announced that SS Xander Bogaerts has been reactivated from the 10-day injured list after he has made a recovery from a fractured bone in his foot. The 32-year-old will be batting second in Tuesday's game.

In a corresponding move in Bogaerts' return, San Diego optioned RHP Bruce Zimmerman to the Arizona Complex League.

The Padres' shortstop was originally supposed to make his return in the previous days, but delays in his pregame workouts with his injured foot kept him from doing so, RotoWire.com reported.

Bogaerts had been out since late August after hitting a foul ball off his foot in a 4-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Aug. 27. The $280 million shortstop will be making his return just in time for postseason play.
