Padres not expected to trade Robert Suarez after Mason Miller deal

A.J. Preller made his first move of the 2025 MLB trade deadline, and it was a massive one. He traded his top prospect, Leo De Vries, along with three pitching prospects, to the Athletics for Mason Miller and J.P. Sears.

Miller likely becomes the Padres' closer, and while there has been speculation that this could open the door to a potential Robert Suarez trade, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the Padres aren't considering a Suarez trade despite landing Miller.

"The Padres have no plans to trade closer Robert Suarez," Nightengale writes, "giving them the best bullpen in baseball. They may also keep starter Dylan Cease, after all, with J.P. Sears giving them plenty of depth. Once again, the Padres are all-in."

If the Padres do hold onto Suarez, then their bullpen, which was already the best in baseball before the Miller trade, would become even more scary.

Suarez leads all of MLB in saves with 30, and has a 3.43 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 47 appearances this season. Miller has a 3.76 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 38 appearances. While they have slightly higher ERAs, they are still elite relievers.

The rest of the Padres' bullpen is also incredible. Jeremiah Estrada has a 2.59 ERA and 66 strikeouts, Jason Adam has a 1.89 ERA and 56 strikeouts, and Adrian Morejon has a 1.63 ERA and 50 strikeouts.

There are also other solid pitchers, like Wandy Peralta, Yuki Matsui, David Morgan, and Ron Marinaccio, but the Padres bullpen, with the addition of Miller and their plan to keep Suarez, is the most dangerous in baseball.

Their intention of keeping Suarez on the roster is a sign that the Padres are going all-in this season. If they were looking to have flexibility in the future, Suarez, who's expected to hit free agency in the offseason after declining his player options, should be traded.

But the Padres are planning to keep him, and potentially Cease, who is also set to be a free agent. This is a clear indication that the Padres are going for it this season and are willing to spend big to do so.

Sitting just three games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the NL West, making a push for the World Series isn't outlandish for the Padres. Nightengale's report suggests the Padres are all-in, and after the Miller trade, it's hard to argue with that mindset.
