Padres' Manny Machado issues threat to Dodgers: 'They gotta pray'

The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres' latest series was not short of drama. Both teams took exception to some hit-by-pitches in the series, but Thursday night's matchup saw both managers get ejected.

In the top of the ninth inning, Fernando Tatis Jr. was hit by a pitch in the right hand. Benches cleared and both managers exchanged words before Dave Roberts bumped Mike Shildt and both managers were tossed. Tatis had X-rays done on his right hand, and they came back negative, according to MLB.com's Sonja Chen and AJ Cassavell.

Although Tatis' X-rays were negative, he will undergo further testing. Manny Machado did not hold back when talking about the extra imaging Tatis will undergo.

"Let's just hope the CT scan comes back negative," said Machado. "They gotta pray it comes back negative tomorrow. They better put up a candle."

It sounds like there are more hit by pitches in the future if Tatis ends up missing time. The Padres already retaliated later in the ninth inning by hitting Shohei Ohtani with a fastball up high. Ohtani waved at his dugout, potentially preventing another bench-clearing incident. It was the second time Ohtani was plucked in retaliation in the series.

Clearly both sides took exception to their stars being hit. If Tatis ends up missing time, it sounds like Machado and the Padres will want to throw at some of the Dodgers' stars. Roberts spoke on whether there was any intent behind Tatis being hit.

"I’m taking starters out of the game, trying to get this game over with and get this kid a couple innings," Roberts said per MLB.com. "And so that’s why, I felt, I took that personal. Because I understand the game, and I understand that it doesn’t feel good to get hit.”

"I think anyone would understand there’s no intent there," Roberts said per MLB.com. "And even by my reaction, I didn’t feel good about Tatis -- great player, good guy -- getting hit."
