San Diego Padres' infielder, Luis Arraez, had a semi-scary moment over the weekend when he was running out onto the field and was struck in the head by a ball that was intended for first baseman Ryan O'Hearn.
Arraez was met on the field by the San Diego training staff and later evaluated for a head injury. He missed Sunday's game against the Colorado Rockies, but had good news to report about when he should be in the lineup.
Padres' Luis Arraez shares his injury timeline
Padres manager Mike Shildt noted that it's "just one of those odd things" that happens in baseball, where it was totally a fluke injury.
"I got a little dizzy (Saturday)," Arraez told reporters. "But I'm good."
"The San Diego Padres mean a lot because they gave me a lot of opportunity, especially to play here in the beautiful city and right to the beautiful fans. The crowd here is every day full and I love San Diego."
Arraez is entering a crucial home stretch of this season and into the playoffs, as he has an important free agency following the season. It seems as if Arraez wants to stay in San Diego, but that decision will ultimately be up to AJ Preller and the Padres' front office.
The 28-year-old utilityman is hitting in the high-.280s this season, but has a below-average OPS+ (95), just seven home runs, and a bWAR of just 1.1 on the season.
His free agency decision is one of the more intriguing of the looming offseason, and it will show a lot about how teams/front offices value him as a player. But for now, San Diego hopes he doesn't miss much longer with the head injury, and can help them down the stretch.
