While A.J. Preller and the San Diego Padres are going to try and land a left fielder, catcher, and a starter, the team could also be in the market for relief pitching.
Robert Suarez is a free agent after the year, and the Padres could look to make a splash at the deadline in pursuit of one of the top arms on the market.
If they do make such a pursuit, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic thinks the Padres could target one of the best closers in baseball in a trade deadline blockbuster. That pitcher is Athletics closer Mason Miller.
"A year ago, Athletics closer Mason Miller was untouchable." Rosenthal wrote. "... But according to sources briefed on the team's plans, that stance is subject to change."
Miller becoming available would be a huge deal for the baseball world. But, as Rosenthal mentions, "Only a few teams are bold enough to propose an offer for Miller worthy of consideration."
Preller and the Padres are one of those teams. They don't shy away from blockbusters, and to land a player like Miller, the return would have to be immense. And while other teams may balk, the Padres under Preller might not.

"The San Diego Padres just sent three relievers to the All-Star Game," Rosenthal writes, "but general manager A.J. Preller can never be ruled out on top talent."
Miller would easily be the top talent available at the trade deadline. According to Baseball Savant, Miller's fastball has an average velocity of 101 miles per hour, the only pitcher in the 101 or higher range, one of three with an average velocity in triple digits.
This season hasn't been the best for Miller, as he has a 4.04 ERA, 19 saves, 57 strikeouts, and 17 walks in 35.2 innings pitched. In 2024, Miller was an All-Star with a 2.49 ERA and 104 strikeouts with 28 saves in 65 innings pitched.
That 2024 season is why teams have been eager to try and land the Athletics closer. If he became available, the top contenders would be vying for Miller, and the Padres would be one of those teams.
Despite their strong bullpen, the Padres are still linked to a reliever at the trade deadline. And this isn't just any reliever, it's one of the best in the game. Miller to San Diego would be an interesting move, and would be another Preller deadline blockbuster.
