Tensions boiled over once again last night during the San Diego Padres’ matchup with the St. Louis Cardinals.
For the second straight game, the benches cleared between the two teams. This time after Manny Machado was hit by a pitch in the 9th inning by rookie Andre Granillo. It was the second time that Machado was plunked in the game.
Things escalated quickly after Cardinals bench coach Jon Jay directed comments towards Machado on the field, Jay was then promptly ejected from the game.
Machado — who had previously held a public friendship with Jay due to their Miami ties — didn’t mince words when asked if he was still friends with the Cardinals coach.
“No. Absolutely not,” Machado said, per Dennis Lin and Katie Woo of The Athletic.
Machado also implied that Jay escalated the incident with his comments after being plunked by the Cardinals rookie.
“I mean, poor kid. I know he probably doesn’t want to do that in that situation, per Lin and Woo. “Obviously, you see him, what he does. He just kind of feels bad. “You’re just pissed off, you know? It is what it is. I mean, there was nothing to it. But then you got somebody else coming up and yapping their mouth. That’s when s— starts getting real.”
This won’t be the end of these two teams matching up, as they’ll see each other another four times in the next seven days, with a three-game series in San Diego set to start late next week.
