Packers reportedly lost bidding war to Jaguars for Browns' $12M sought-after trade asset

The Green Bay Packers defense has a new face — and a new vocal leader — in Micah Parsons, following his blockbuster arrival from the Dallas Cowboys. Parsons is already raising the standard in Green Bay, and after the Packers allowed 40 points to his former team, he made it clear that performance wasn’t acceptable.

“Micah Parsons said he pulled Jordan Love aside after game and apologized for defense not holding up its end, allowing 40 points. He said Love was exceptional, and giving up 40 points was inexcusable, something Packers defense needs to use bye week to ensure it never happens again,” Packers beat writer Ryan Wood wrote.

Parsons’ frustration reflects the reality of the Packers’ defensive struggles, particularly in the secondary. That’s why Green Bay had been in contact with the Cleveland Browns about cornerback Greg Newsome, who’s in the final year of his contract and became expendable.

Unfortunately for the Packers, Newsome is off the board.

“There goes a trade target. GB has spoken to the Browns about Newsome several times this year I'm told,” Packers Report’s Easton Butler posted.

Newsome was instead traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Wednesday night, in a multi-team deal first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“Another major Jaguars-Browns trade, per ESPN sources. Jaguars get CB Greg Newsome and the Jets’ 2026 sixth-round pick from the Browns. Browns get CB Tyson Campbell and the Eagles’ 2026 7th-round pick from the Jaguars,” Schefter wrote.

This move is likely a gut punch for Green Bay, which clearly had interest but couldn’t offer a package strong enough to close the deal. Whether it was draft capital or a player mismatch, Cleveland went in a different direction.

Now, the Packers will either have to look elsewhere to upgrade their secondary — or move forward with the current group. Meanwhile, the Jaguars landed a player they had their eye on, in what was yet another unpredictable trade swing across the league.

This is the beauty — and the brutality — of NFL trade season.
