Packers proposal lands Raiders free agent quarterback for depth behind Jordan Love

The Green Bay Packers are in an ideal quarterback situation heading into the 2025 season. The team has a franchise quarterback in Jordan Love, who has led them to the playoffs in each of the last two years. Green Bay also has a high-level backup in Malik Willis, who proved in 2024 that he can win games when called upon.

Though the Packers aren't in need of a quarterback, A to Z Sports' Wendell Ferreira believes general manager Brian Gutekunst should sign Las Vegas Raiders free agent signal-caller Desmond Ridder for depth purposes.

"The Packers can create a competition for the QB3 job, because Malik Willis is entering the final year of his contract and can go elsewhere in 2026 trying to be a starter," Ferreira wrote.

"Ridder has starting experience for the Atlanta Falcons, and while his performance wasn't great, he showed more than enough to be a viable backup—he played better for the Falcons than Willis did for the Tennessee Titans, albeit under better circumstances. Last year, he spent some time with the Arizona Cardinals' practice squad before being signed by the Las Vegas Raiders, where he started a game," Ferreira added.

Ridder spent the 2024 season with the Raiders and started one game while tossing two touchdowns to two interceptions with a 61.2% completion rate. The former third-round pick was the Atlanta Falcons' starter in 2023 but underwhelmed before being traded to the Arizona Cardinals during the 2024 offseason. He was cut in training camp by the Cardinals, leading him to sign in Las Vegas.

Willis is likely locked in as QB2, but Ridder would be a solid No.3 in Green Bay's quarterback room. The 25-year-old has starting experience but also has some room to grow and could find a home in Matt LaFleur's system.

Additionally, Ridder should be cheap to sign, and there is zero risk in adding him to compete for a roster spot with Sean Clifford.
