Packers have conference rival’s $72 million two-time Pro Bowler as ‘trade target’

Despite not having a wide receiver who gained 1,000 yards or earned a Pro Bowl nod, the Green Bay Packers still had the eighth-highest-scoring offense during the 2024 NFL season.

Jayden Reed, Christian Watson, Romeo Doub, and Dontayvion Wicks essentially shared opportunities, with all four receivers being targeted at least 70 times. Yet, none were targeted more than Wicks, who received 76 targets.

Unfortunately, one of those four young receivers, Watson, suffered a torn ACL in the team's Week 18 loss to the Chicago Bears. The timing of Watson’s injury is likely to keep him sidelined at the start of the 2025 NFL season while he goes through his recovery process.

While the Packers don’t currently have any star receivers, that could change this offseason.

During the Packers’ season-ending press conference, general manager Brian Gutekunst addressed the media. In that presser, Gutekunst specifically mentioned how the front office had Pro Bowl wideouts D.K. Metcalf and Deebo Samuel rated closely to guard Elgton Jenkins during their pre-draft evaluations.

This led Locked on Packers host Peter Bukowski to highlight how both star receivers could be on the trade block for their respective teams this offseason.

It's interesting Brian Gutekunst mentioned he had DK Metcalf and Deebo Samuel similarly rated to Elgton Jenkins in the draft because both of those guys could be on the block this spring.

This mindset led Dairyland Express’ Jovan Alford to describe Metcalf as one of the Packers trade targets this offseason.

"Between the two wide receivers, Metcalf would be the perfect trade target for Green Bay as he can stretch the field and be the big-body receiver Love needs on the boundary," Alford wrote.

Metcalf signed a three-year, $72 million contract extension with Seattle in 2022, which means he’s headed into the final year of his deal. Unless the Seahawks reach another extension with their 27-year-old wideout, he could emerge as a top trade candidate. If so, the Packers should be picking up the phone.
