The NFL’s controversial "tush push" play is here to stay — at least for now.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, the final vote on the Green Bay Packers’ proposal to ban the quarterback push play fell just short of approval, with 22 owners voting in favor and 10 against. The proposal needed 24 votes to pass.
“The final vote on Green Bay's push-play ban proposal was 22-10,” Breer wrote. “That means the proposal actually gained support between the March meetings and today, with the NFL's desire to enact a ban falling just two votes shy of the 24 needed to pass.”
Despite vocal criticism from some coaches and executives, the play — made famous by the Philadelphia Eagles and commonly referred to as the "tush push" — remains legal heading into the 2025 NFL season.
The league had previously discussed player safety concerns and potential competitive imbalance caused by the play, but not enough support was mustered to take action this year.
