The Green Bay Packers are 3-2 on the year after a blowout win over the Chicago Bears. But that game could've been an even bigger blowout.
In the Week 5 win, rookie kicker Trey Smack missed multiple kicks, with one extra point and two field goals going wide of the uprights. That is not what the Packers want to see, especially after kicker issues sunk their season last year.
ESPN's Bill Barnwell highlighted the uncomfortable question the Packers now must ask themselves about Smack after Week 5. While it's too soon to completely give up on Smack, the concern about his production is very real heading into Week 6.
Packers have uncomfortable Trey Smack question after three missed kicks vs. Bears
"One bad game shouldn't sink Smack. If he struggles in the weeks to come, though, the Packers might not be willing to go into the winter with an inexperienced kicker, especially given what happened to them in the postseason a year ago," Barnwell writes.
Smack missed an extra point and field goals from 43 and 47 yards out in Week 5 against the Bears. Fortunately, they blew the Bears out, and those missed kicks didn't hurt the Packers.
But when games get closer and start to mean more, those missed kicks will be inexcusable. The Packers should give him a bit more of a chance to right the ship.
Smack can begin with a good Sunday Night Football matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. If he does that and follows it up with strong performances over the next few weeks, this Week 5 performance can be written off as a one-off bad game.

But if Smack were to continue to miss kicks like he did last weekend, then the Packers might have no choice but to have an uncomfortable conversation about Smack.
Would they really cut ties with the rookie sixth-round kicker? It's not totally out of the question, especially if these struggles continue.
This Packers team has a chance to contend in 2026, and they would be foolish to stick with a struggling rookie kicker. All of this concern could be moot if Smack figures things out.
But, in the worst-case scenario, the Packers might be finding a new kicker soon, which would be quite the unfortunate turn of events for the Packers and Smack. This is a situation to watch, as a lot could change in the near future.
