Packers-Cowboys trade pitch sends first-round draft capital, $4M WR to Dallas for 52-sack machine

The Dallas Cowboys are not in a good place right now when it comes to keeping Micah Parsons happy. The root of the issue lies in owner Jerry Jones attempting to negotiate a contract extension directly with Parsons—without involving his agent, David Mulugheta.

“The fact that Jerry Jones and the Cowboys believe they can negotiate a 9-figure extension with Micah Parsons without involving his agent says everything about the current state of the franchise. This entire situation is laughable from the Dallas side. It could’ve — and should’ve — been avoided. But instead, the Cowboys operated with pure arrogance, foolishness and stubbornness,” NFL insider Jordan Schultz posted.

This misstep eventually led to Parsons publicly announcing that he no longer wanted to play for the Cowboys, officially submitting a trade request.

“Still I stayed quiet but again after repeated shots at myself and all the narratives I have made a tough decision I no longer want to play for the Dallas Cowboys. My trade request has been submitted to Stephen Jones personally,” Parsons posted.

One team that could be a serious contender for Parsons is the Green Bay Packers. According to The Athletic’s Jon Mochata, the Packers could offer two first-round picks and wide receiver Romeo Doubs in exchange for Parsons.

“The Packers don’t make these types of trades. General manager Brian Gutekunst might dry heave at the thought of giving away his next two first-round picks and a reliable offensive weapon. However, this situation is different, draft capital, Doubs and the contract Parsons is due be damned. Gutekunst is entering his eighth season as Packers GM having never made a Super Bowl appearance. New team president Ed Policy isn’t extending Gutekunst’s contract (yet), which has two years remaining on it, and doesn’t want him in a contract year. This season could be important for Gutekunst’s long-term future in the job, and what better way to make a statement to your new boss than acquiring a player who could help the Packers return to the game’s biggest stage,” Mochata wrote.

Throughout the offseason—and even now—the Packers have been linked to several pass rushers. Outside of concerns in the cornerback room, edge pressure is Green Bay’s biggest defensive need. Adding Parsons would fill that void immediately. The Packers also have the cap flexibility to absorb the large extension Parsons is reportedly seeking.
