Packers-Bengals trade pitch sends $60M, 77-sack veteran to Green Bay to bolster Super Bowl odds

The Packers have made several notable moves to reshape the defensive side of the ball, particularly in the secondary. One of the most surprising was GM Brian Gutekunst’s decision to release cornerback Jaire Alexander in June, rather than trading him for potential value.

Now, Green Bay is shifting its focus to the defensive front. One potential addition is veteran pass rusher Matthew Judon.

“Even though the Packers struck gold last season with Javon Bullard and Evan Williams, they cannot depend on Sorrell and Oliver to be instant contributors from Day 1. Therefore, it would be best for them to bring in a veteran before training camp begins later this month, as they still don’t know what former first-round pick Lukas Van Ness is,” Dairyland Express’ Jovan Alford wrote. “Given the current talent in the edge department, there's nothing to lose by bringing in Judon. If he’s motivated and looking to prove that last year wasn’t his best, the Packers could end up getting a steal.”

If Green Bay doesn’t land Judon, trading for another veteran could be on the table. Bleacher Report’s Matt Holder has proposed a bold idea: acquire Trey Hendrickson before the season begins.

“This would depend on how much money Hendrickson is looking for, but the Packers currently have $35.5 million of cap space available in 2025, per Over The Cap, and need an edge-rusher,” Holder wrote. “If the Cheeseheads can make the finances work, their Super Bowl odds should see a significant increase by adding last year's sack leader.”

Bringing in Hendrickson would be a power move for the Packers—one that would send a message not just to the NFC North, but to the entire NFL. Wide receiver Matthew Golden has already made it clear that the team is aiming to bring a Lombardi Trophy back to Green Bay, and adding Hendrickson would be a big step in that direction.
