The long NBA season offers numerous handicapping situations and baffles even the most talented sports bettors. The daily grind can often feel like navigating a minefield.

However, occasionally a trend or particular matchup offers a favorable opportunity, and one must understand certain intricacies and nuances to detect it.

The Pacers host the Wizards as 8.5-point favorites with a total of 235.5 points.

They own the Eastern Conference’s two worst records for a combined 9-39 mark, but Indiana has shown respectability lately with a few key players returning from injury. Meanwhile, Washington owns the NBA’s worst overall record (3-20) and a league-worst 7-16 mark against the spread (ATS).

For context, struggling teams usually perform decently when the point spread is involved, but Washington has been that bad. For example, three of the other five teams currently in last place in their respective division have a winning ATS record. It’s just so rare to get blown out on a consistent basis like Washington has.

But the Wizards are the very definition of inconsistency, given they almost never play well in consecutive games. Following their three wins, the Wizards have lost their next game by at least 19 points for an average margin of 26.0 points.

Plus, they are just 1-5 ATS in the game following a point spread cover, which is the case in Indy. The Wizards just lost to the Cavaliers by four points but did cover (+17). Recent history would suggest they are unlikely to duplicate the necessary effort and execution.

Betting on the NBA?

Meanwhile, the Pacers are coming off their own tough loss, failing to give coach Rick Carlisle his 1,000th career win. I do believe in Indy to respond and get back on track.

After battling the injury bug to start the year, the Pacers have resembled a competent team lately, having won four of their past seven games.

I have an 81-70-2 ATS record in this Post sports section and my next play is the Pacers -9.5 points against the Wizards (-110, BetMGM Sportsbook).
