Team India's star batter Shubman Gill has reportedly been ruled out of the fourth T20I of the five-match series against South Africa due to a toe injury. The match kicks off at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow, on Wednesday, December 17.

According to a Cricbuzz report, Gill has been rested for the game due to a foot injury. Notably, he is the team's vice-captain for the series. However, his batting form has come under the scanner after back-to-back failures.

The T20I series opener marked Gill's return to international cricket after recovering from a neck injury. He was dismissed for just four runs on his comeback.

Gill failed to redeem himself in the subsequent fixtures as well, registering scores of 0 and 28. Meanwhile, India lead the series 2-1, making the Lucknow T20I a must-win one for the visitors.

Sanju Samson could get a look-in if Shubman Gill is rested for IND vs SA 2025 4th T20I

India would need a new opener if Shubman Gill is unavailable for the fourth T20I due to a foot injury. The Men in Blue have wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson on the bench, who has done an impressive job at the top of the order in the past.

It remains to be seen if the team management will bring Samson back as an opener in Gill's absence. The stumper has scored 522 runs across 17 matches at a strike rate of 178.76 as an opener in T20Is.

Meanwhile, the Suryakumar Yadav-led side comes into the encounter with a stunning seven-wicket win at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala. The Proteas were bundled out for 117 after being put in to bat first.

Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav took two wickets each. The hosts chased the target in just 15.5 overs. Opener Abhishek Sharma was the top performer with the bat, finishing with 35 runs off 18 balls.
