Orioles have discussed trade with Mariners for three-time All-Star pitcher

The Baltimore Orioles have some needs they must address before the start of spring training. They could use another bullpen arm but also a top-level starting pitcher.

Without Corbin Burnes, Baltimore does not have an ace to anchor their starting rotation. Burnes ultimately signed a six-year contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

However, Jon Morosi of MLB Network notes that they have had some trade discussions with the Seattle Mariners about their ace.

"The Baltimore Orioles and Seattle Mariners have talked before and in recent days about a potential [Luis] Castillo trade to Baltimore, where a younger bat would go to Seattle" Morosi said.

There are complicating factors. Castillo has a full no-trade clause and is owed a good amount of money, as Morosi notes, so a trade will be difficult.

However, Baltimore would benefit greatly from having his experience at the top of its rotation. Last year, the veteran right-hander went 11-12 with a 3.64 ERA in his 30 starts. He also pitched 175 1/3 innings and struck out 175 batters,

If he can stay healthy, he could still be a top-level pitcher. Baltimore would likely have to give up a big piece in order to make this work, but it might be worth it if they want to contend for the top spot in the American League East.

Perhaps one of their two top prospects, catcher Samuel Basallo and infielder Coby Mayo could be sent back to Seattle in a potential trade.

We'll see if talks progress between the two teams and if they can strike a deal.
