The Denver Broncos signed Levi Wallace this offseason as added insurance at a shaky position. The veteran brought quality experience to a young group. But one bad game was all it took for him to be shown the door.
Wallace played in 13 games for the Broncos this season, making two starts. But it was when Riley Moss was unable to go in Week 13 on Monday Night Football against the Cleveland Browns that Wallace was forced into the lineup and played one of the worst games anyone has played in the NFL this season.
That night, Wallace was primarily responsible for covering former Broncos wide receiver Jerry Jeudy and Jeudy had a career game, catching nine passes for 235 yards and a touchdown. Wallace was not even close in coverage on many of Jeudy's big plays and the team finally made the move to bench him in favor of the rookie Kris Abrams-Draine down the stretch.
Wallace was made a healthy scratch in each of the team's two games after that and Abrams-Draine is coming along nicely since seeing more playing time. Those factors led to the team waiving Wallace on Christmas Eve.
Broncos waive Levi Wallace after just 13 games with the team
Wallace went undrafted out of Alabama in 2018 but spent four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers before playing with the Buffalo Bills the past two seasons. The Broncos were hoping that the quality experience he received there would translate well to what they were trying to do on defense.
But Wallace was easily beaten out by Moss this summer for the starting cornerback job opposite Pat Surtain II and when pressed into action, Wallace just didn't hold up.
He finishes his time in Denver with 28 tackles and two pass deflections. If not claimed on waivers, he will be free to sign with any other team.
