Omarion Hampton will officially miss multiple weeks, options are slim for Chargers

2 hours ago 1

The Los Angeles Chargers are watching their season come totally undone due to injuries, and things stand to get worse. After leaving the team's Week 5 game against the Washington Commanders, rookie running back Omarion Hampton will go on injured reserve, meaning he will miss at least the next four weeks.

It is a brutal loss for the team's offense. After already losing Najee Harris to a season-ending injury, Hampton was beginning to get into a great groove. The first-round pick had 172 yards rushing on 24 carries and a touchdown to go along with 11 receptions for another 63 yards in the last two games since Harris was hurt.

The Chargers are in a major hole now at running back, and the options going forward look bleak.

The three running backs on the roster include Kimani Vidal, Hassan Haskins and Amar Johnson. Vidal was a sixth-round pick last year who most fans were highly excited about, but he has yet to show much in his short career. Haskins is more of a special teams guy who is a bruising runner, but he's been a favorite of Jim Harbaugh's since college. Amar Johnson is an intriguing player who is currently on the team's practice squad. After going undrafted out of South Dakota State, he had a strong preseason with the Green Bay Packers. He was a bit of a surprise cut by them and the Chargers signed him to the practice squad.

Looking at what options the Chargers may have, there aren't many. But fans are going to begin by discussing some of the options that could have been there.

J.K. Dobbins had a strong season for the team last year, but it chose not to re-sign him this offseason and he is now in Denver, where he looks good. Raheim Sanders was considered to be a hidden gem when the Chargers signed him as an undrafted free agent and he was solid for the team in the preseason. But the Chargers cut him, hoping to bring him back to the practice squad, only to see him get claimed on waivers by the Cleveland Browns

Harbaugh and Joe Hortiz are going to have to consider signing a veteran name on the free-agent market or making a trade to get another option on the roster. Here are some names for the team to consider. With a banged-up offensive line and a depleted rushing attack, things could start to go downhill in a hurry for this squad.
