Olivia Rodrigo Slams “Disturbing” Babydoll Dress Controversy

Olivia Rodrigo Teases Current Phase of Love Amid Louis Partridge Split Rumors

Olivia Rodrigo is taking one step forward while her haters are taking three steps back.

Less than a month after the “Drop Dead” singer sparked outrage online for wearing a women’s Generation78 puff-sleeved babydoll dress with bloomers, she shared her perspective.

“That’s been making me so upset,” Olivia admitted in an interview with The New York TimesPopcast podcast May 28 episode. “Not even for me, like I don’t even care. People can say whatever they want.”

However, the 23-year-old admitted that it was “really disturbing” to see people up in arms over what she thought was a modest outfit.

“I have worn outfits that are like, maybe revealing on stage,” she considered. “Like, I’ve been on stage in a sparkly bra and like little shorts which is my right. That’s fun. I felt cool and comfortable in that. That wasn’t inappropriate, but me fully covered up in a dress that people deemed childlike was inappropriate."

Indeed, following Olivia’s May 8 Spotify Billions Club performance in Barcelona, online critics disparaged her latest era, with one X user accusing her of using “aesthetics that appeal to pedophiles."

However, Olivia clapped back, “It just shows how we really normalize pedophila in our culture. It’s this rhetoric we’re fed as girls since we’re so little, which is, ‘Don’t wear that because then a man is going to sexualize your body and it’s your fault.’ Like, it’s so weird.”

As for the dress that sparked the debate? “The Cure” singer explained she was going for a riot grrl aesthetic.

“I didn’t think I looked sexy in that at all,” she admitted. “I was like, this is so cool. I feel like I look like Kathleen Hanna or Courtney Love. All these people who are my heroes. And I felt cool and comfortable in it.”

Trust, Olivia is not going to be taking fashion advice from the peanut gallery.

“I think if we start dressing in a way that’s like, ‘Oh I don’t want some f--king freak to think that I am like sexy like a baby,’ or some crazy thing like that,” she noted, “I just think it’s losing the plot a little bit.”

And the Disney alum confirmed she’ll continue to dress how she wants not only for herself—but her young fans.

“I’m just very protective of younger women and girls and I don’t ever want them to fed that rhetoric,” she shared. “You shouldn’t be responsible for some guy sexualizing you in a way that was never your intention.”
