Oklahoma State’s Clint Bowen sent dire warning on UH, UC, Texas Tech, Kansas, K-State, UCF, Iowa State

Oklahoma State Cowboys defensive coordinator Clint Bowen didn’t improve the defense in his first game with a full week to prepare, getting decimated by the Arizona Wildcats 41-13 in Tucson. Worse yet, Yahoo Sports’ Nick Bromberg doesn’t have confidence that OSU’s point-prevention situation will improve, even after Todd Grantham’s firing.

Bromberg predicts that the Cowboys will need to win shootouts for the rest of the season for Doug Meacham to have any chance of shedding the interim label. Oklahoma State has games remaining at home against the Houston Cougars, Cincinnati Bearcats, Kansas State Wildcats, and Iowa State Cyclones. The Pokes also travel to Lubbock to take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders, Lawrence to take on the Kansas Jayhawks, and Orlando to take on the UCF Knights.

“A defensive coordinator change did not improve anything immediately in Stillwater. Arizona routed the Cowboys 41-13 in OSU’s first game after the firing of defensive coordinator Todd Grantham. The Cowboys’ defense continued to be dreadful as Arizona had 433 passing yards to the 158 total yards by Oklahoma State’s offense. Things may not get much better in Stillwater anytime soon,” Bromberg wrote.

Mike Gundy’s firing was never going to immediately fix things. It may be a long-term rebuilding project, depending on who’s hired. Still, there’s hope over the long haul that the Cowboys could be a well-funded program with a high ceiling.

Many see OSU as a better job than the Arkansas Razorbacks’, which may not be available if Bobby Petrino could impress after taking over for Sam Pittman. Those two jobs will be competing for a similar pool of candidates this offseason if Petrino isn’t Hunter Yurachek’s long-term answer in Fayetteville.

In the interim, though, Cowboy fans could expect plenty of losses during the 2025 season. The quarterback with the most snaps has zero touchdown passes and three interceptions. OSU has seven touchdowns through five games. Three of them came against the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks.

It’ll probably get worse before it gets much better.

Luckily, presumably, the 69-3 beatdown at the hands of the Oregon Ducks will probably be the low point of the season. One would think.
