The end is coming for Oklahoma State Cowboys football coach Mike Gundy in Stillwater. The only thing to be determined is whether it will happen before or after the conclusion of the Pokes’ 2025 season.
CBS Sports’ Shehan Jeyajarah predicts a timetable of today and December for Gundy to finally have the plug pulled on his OSU tenure following an unfathomable 19-12 loss to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane at home.
“If last week's 66-point loss to Oregon felt like rock bottom, Friday night proved it wasn't,” Jeyarajah wrote.
“In front of a packed Boone Pickens Stadium, Oklahoma State lost to Tulsa at home for the first time since 1951. And it wasn't close. After OSU scored on its opening possession, Tulsa ripped off a 19-0 run and never looked back, finishing with more than 200 yards both rushing and passing.
“Fans booed Gundy as he left the field, a surreal moment for a coach who once defined the program. Whether the end comes Sunday or in December, it's clear: the Gundy era is over.”
Jeyarajah’s colleague, CBS Sports’ Brandon Marcello, likened however long Gundy has left coaching the Cowboys to a “last call.”
“The 19-12 loss to Tulsa on Friday night wasn't an origin story. What we saw here at The House T. Boone Pickens Built was the last chapter of an era gone by when the Cowboys were the good guys and the Wild West's contenders couldn't confidently crown themselves Big 12 champions until surviving a shootout in Stillwater,” Marcello wrote.
“The most colorful man in the Midwest, a treasure for college football the last three decades, has faded into obscurity -- and the winningest coach in Oklahoma State history has no one to blame but himself. If this wasn't Gundy's last call alongside Pistol Pete, it only confirms the Cowboys have bigger issues to tackle within their administration. Athletics director Chad Wieberg is on shaky ground, having worked without a contract since June 30 under a new university president. Wieberg may be the boss, but someone above his head may have to swing the axe this weekend.”
Gundy may be too respected to fire unceremoniously midseason, barring an incident. If Oklahoma State University wants to shame his legacy and tarnish their PR, they could try to find a reason to fire him for cause to void his contract buyout.
The Cowboys want to replace Gundy with someone reputable. Don’t expect that nuclear option.
