Introduced as a tribute to the 1968 title team, the Buckeyes debuted the uniforms during the inaugural College Football Playoff, beating Alabama in the 2015 Sugar Bowl in the road version and Oregon in the title game in the home version.

OSU will wear the white version of the classic jersey featuring gray and scarlet sleeves to honor past champions and include a “2025″ patch to acknowledge the College Football Playoff. This year, the Nike Swoosh will be gold instead of silver to match the Playoff's color theme.

The last time Ohio State wore these uniforms was also at the Mercedes Benz Superdome in Atlanta for the 2022 Peach Bowl against Georgia. The Bulldogs defeated the Buckeyes 42-41 in that game to advance to the National Championship.

The Buckeyes are 2-3 when wearing these jerseys, with Sugar Bowl victories over Alabama in 2015 and Clemson in 2021. Ohio State lost in the retro uniforms to the Tigers in the 2017 Fiesta Bowl and the Crimson Tide in the 2021 National Championship game.

Notre Dame jerseys for the National Championship

While there has been no official announcement, it is expected Notre Dame will wear its traditional blue and gold home uniforms for the National Championship.

Although Notre Dame’s official colors have long been listed as blue and gold, the color of the Irish home football jersey has switched back and forth between blue and green for over 50 years.

Since 1940, not including the "green jersey games" or Shamrock Series, the uniform has had major changes about 14 times. The last change came in the 1984 season when the Irish returned to the standard navy blue jerseys. The gold Irish helmets and pants remained unchanged.

Since Marcus Freeman took over as head coach, Notre Dame has had even more jersey variance, breaking a record this season for most uniform combos worn in school history with six in the 2024 campaign.
