NY Yankees deemed potential trade fit for ex-USC Trojans baseball signee, Colorado Rockies star Ryan McMahon

The New York Yankees are in their worst slump of the season, currently on a five-game losing streak, and have been shut out in their last three games. With the recent offensive struggles the Bronx Bombers have had, and the trade deadline season rapidly approaching, an external solution seems like the way to go.

With Oswaldo Cabrera out for the season with an ankle injury, the most logical option for the New York Yankees is Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon.

McMahon, 30, was an MLB All-Star in 2024 and is currently in the fourth year of a six-year, $70 million extension.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com recently tabbed the Yankees as a potential fit for the former USC Baseball signee, while mentioning McMahon’s value potentially rising.

“The Rockies had hoped for McMahon to be part of their core when they turned things around, but Colorado appears to be far away from that point, making McMahon a potential trade chip. The 30-year-old has turned things around following a sluggish start, hitting seven homers with 16 RBIs and an .855 OPS in 37 games since May 7, while ranking in the top 10 percent of the league this season in average exit velocity, hard-hit percentage and walk percentage. A stellar defensive third baseman, McMahon is signed for $12 million in 2025 and $16 million in each of the next two seasons,” Feinsand wrote.

McMahon would fit like a glove into the Yankees' roster, providing elite defense (six DRS) and a batted ball profile that plays perfectly into Yankee Stadium’s dimensions.

This season, he has a 53.1% hard hit rate, a 13.6% barrel rate,  an average exit velocity of 98.4, and an 18.5% Pull-Air%. Baseball Savant’s player comparison tool has compared McMahon to potential Yankee teammates Jazz Chisholm and Jasson Dominguez.

Sounds like a needle-mover. Brian Cashman and Aaron Boone need one to return the Yanks to late October baseball.
