Nuggets news: team faces extremely worrisome update about Jokić contract extension

22 hours ago 1

The Denver Nuggets need Nikola Jokić to stay in Denver. Without him, they will likely have no chance of competing for an NBA championship for many years. That’s why recent comments from team president Josh Kroenke regarding a possible Nikola Jokić contract extension should have Nuggets fans very worried.

“We’re definitely going to offer it. I’m not sure if he’s going to accept it or not,” said Kroenke about a potential Jokić contract extension this summer.

For Nuggets fans, this is not what you want to hear. Jokić wanting to stay and finish his career as a Nugget is all anyone in Denver is hoping for.

The fact that the team president isn’t fully confident in that is not great news.

Maybe Kroenke is just choosing his words wisely, not wanting to count his chickens before they hatch.

If not, and Jokić decides not to extend because he is considering leaving Denver, the Nuggets have some major decisions to make.

If Jokić wants out, they need to trade him while his value is at an absolute maximum. There are maybe only one or two players in the league that would bring a bigger trade haul than Jokić.

Right now, Jokić is signed through next season and has a player option after that. If Jokić doesn’t extend this summer and indicates that he is planning to enter free agency in 2027-28, the Nuggets need to hit the panic button.

For now, all they can do is wait. Jokić has earned the ability to dictate his own circumstances. The Nuggets should offer him every cent they can to extend. If not, their entire franchise could crumble before they know it.
