Week 4 of the 2025 college football season features a dandy of a rivalry game, when Notre Dame hosts Purdue in an Indiana slugfest for the ages at South Bend. The rivalry, which began in 1896 and has been called "The Battle for the Shillelagh Trophy" since 1957, is always one of the best games of the season.
Notre Dame blasted the Boilermakers 66-7 last year, a rare beatdown in a lifetime rivalry series that barely ever disappoints. The prior three meetings had been decided by an average of seven points, however Purdue last defeated its home-state foes back in 2004.
Marcus Freeman's Irish might not be much easier this time around. Notre Dame went 14-2 last season, then made it all the way to the national title game before falling to Ohio State. The program now yields the eighth-shortest odds to win it all in 2026, with quarterback CJ Carr and running back Jeremiyah Love benefiting from a revamped offensive line and Chris Ash's defense expected to be one of the best in the nation once again.

Purdue suffered a horrible fall in 2024, finishing 1-11 and going 0-9 in the Big Ten. However, Barry Odom has initiated a very promising rebuild, with 40 transfers, former USC coach Josh Henson as his offensive coordinator, and a defense ready to wipe last year's results out of West Lafayette's collective memory banks.
Needless to say, these teams will both be getting up for this huge Week 4 game, which could easily wind up playing a role in the eventual playoff selections. But, above all else, both squads have Indy pride at stake.
