Argentina defender Nicolas Tagliafico has claimed that Lionel Messi's retirement will be a shock for everyone, despite knowing that he is close to calling it a day. He added that it would be strange as the Inter Miami star has been with the national team for 20 years.

Speaking on Radio La Red, Tagliafico said it would be strange and hopes that the Argentine will take up a role with the national team. He wants the Barcelona legend to become a coach or a mentor and said (via GOAL):

“He’s been playing in Argentina for 20 years. It’s completely unusual. Nobody will be prepared for when Leo is gone. He’ll decide when he’s no longer there. Maybe once he stops playing, he’ll stay on the coaching staff or have some role with the national team.”

Talking about Messi's surprise visit to Camp Nou, Tagliafico said:

“There was a huge fuss about the photo he took at Camp Nou because it was a surprise. I don't know what the situation is, because of the Beckham Law. He could go during the MLS break, but I honestly don't know what he'll do . It's not easy either, especially with the World Cup so close. I don't think it will be simple.”

Lionel Messi has played 54 matches with Tagliafico with the national team. The two were a key part of the 2022 FIFA World Cup win and both Copa America wins in 2021 and 2024.

Lionel Messi admits not thinking about retirement

Lionel Messi has said that he is not thinking about retirement, as he is still enjoying his time on the pitch. The Argentine legend said he will quit as soon as he is not physically up to it or no longer enjoying his time.

He told SPORT (via Football Espana):

“I’m happy with how these years have gone, and as long as I can and feel physically fit, I’ll keep playing the same way, trying to compete, win, and always give my all. The moment I see that I’m not physically up to it, that I’m struggling on the pitch, or that I’m not enjoying it, that will be the moment to call it quits. But right now, I’m enjoying it, I feel good, and that’s where I’m at.”

Lionel Messi has renewed his deal at Inter Miami until 2028. The Argentine is close to calling it time on his international career, having already revealed that he will not be playing another competitive game in his home country.
