Trade talk continues to follow the New Jersey Devils after their failed pursuit of Quinn Hughes. While missing out on the star defenseman drew headlines, it may not signal the end of movement. A new report suggests the Devils are still active behind the scenes, and change could be coming as the season slips.
NHL insider Kevin Weekes added fuel to the discussion with a post on X. He reported that defenseman Dougie Hamilton and forward Ondrej Palat have been discussed in possible trade scenarios.
"Per sources, I’m told D Hamilton and F Palat are among names that have been discussed in potential trade scenarios with @NJDevils . #HockeyX #NJDevils" Weekes wrote. While nothing is confirmed, the names alone signal serious conversations. Both players carry experience and cap weight, which could reshape the roster.
The timing matters for New Jersey, because the Devils sit at 18-14-1 and fifth in the Metropolitan Division. They remain outside a clear playoff spot and have struggled to find rhythm. Defensive issues continue to hurt results, along with injuries to players like Jack Hughes, with goals against piling up. Special teams have also failed to deliver consistent support.
Recent form has only increased urgency. New Jersey has lost seven of its last nine games. Several defeats were one-sided and exposed structural problems. Results have not followed, and the gap between potential and performance continues to widen.
D-man Quinn Hughes' trade to the Minnesota Wild
That backdrop framed the Quinn Hughes chase. New Jersey was seen as a favorite due to family ties with Jack and Luke Hughes. Reports suggest the Devils made a strong opening offer. Minnesota Wild, however, pushed all its chips in and closed the deal. The Wild’s willingness to part with key assets made the difference.
"It's Quinn Hughes," Guerin said. "And I don't know what the right moment is, but if you wait for it, you're gonna miss it. …When it's a player of this caliber, the right time's always now... when a player of Quinn’s caliber comes available, and you have an opportunity to get him, there’s a cost to it and we were willing to do what it takes."Quinn Hughes has already made an impact in Minnesota. He logged nearly 2 minutes and produced right away in his debut. That success only sharpened focus on New Jersey’s next move. Standing still does not appear to be an option.
Whether Hamilton or Palat is moved remains unclear. What is clear is intent, because the Devils are exploring paths to reset balance and urgency.
