T.J. Watt and the Pittsburgh Steelers are still far apart on a long-term contract extension, and that has caused other teams to gear up for the possibility of trading for the superstar edge rusher.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Watt is unhappy with his contract situation in Pittsburgh.
Though the Steelers haven't shown a willingness to trade him yet, the chances of Watt playing elsewhere have increased after Monday's blockbuster trade between Pittsburgh and the Miami Dolphins, which saw Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith go to the Steelers and Minkah Fitzpatrick go to the Dolphins.
"In recent weeks, multiple teams have been discussing whether they can trade for Steelers’ standout T.J. Watt, who skipped the team’s most recent minicamp. Pittsburgh hasn’t shown any willingness to deal Watt so far, but he’s unhappy with his contractual situation and sources believe outside team interest is likely to increase given today’s trade," Schefter wrote on X.
Watt, who skipped mandatory minicamp a few weeks ago, is entering the final year of his deal and is likely seeking a record-breaking contract, given that Myles Garrett received $40 million annually from the Cleveland Browns in an extension earlier this offseason.
Pittsburgh would be foolish to trade Watt, even if negotiations aren't going well right now. However, it looks like Watt being in a new uniform in 2025 is now in the realm of possibilities based on Schefter's report.
