Free agent NFL quarterback and former New York Giant Russell Wilson was in attendance for Saturday's Spring Training game between the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers, reports Greg Joyce of the New York Post Sports.
"Russell Wilson made a cameo in the Yankees clubhouse this morning, walking through and shaking hands with anyone that was at their locker," Joyce wrote on X. "Don't think he'll be taking an AB today though."
Wilson spent the 2025-26 NFL season with the Giants and is a former Super Bowl champion with the Seattle Seahawks. As a two-sport athlete at North Carolina State University, Wilson was selected in the 41st round by the Baltimore Orioles in 2007 and in the 4th round of the 2010 draft by the Colorado Rockies.
Wilson's baseball career
Wilson spent two seasons in the Rockies' minor league system before pursuing a professional football career. He primarily played second base and hit .229 with five home runs and a .710 OPS in 93 games at Low-A Tri-City and Single-A Asheville.
The Yankees made a trade with the Texas Rangers for Wilson in 2018, and he spent that year's spring training with the AL East club.
Wilson struck out in his one plate appearance with the Yankees. As Joyce mentioned, he attended Saturday's exhibition game to watch, not participate.
