There's always a lot of excitement around this time of year, and for the New Orleans Saints, there's that glimmer of hope that this year can be better. The team rounded out last season with a 6-11 record at the bottom of the NFC South, but they have a lot going for them this season.
Unfortunately, for one Saints player, his season is already off to a difficult start. He was just handed a punishment from the NFL. So, he'll have to pay up.
Even though the regular season hasn't started yet, the NFL is already handing out punishments to players who break the rules during the preseason games. These punishments are an effort to "protect the players from unnecessary risk, promote player safety and emphasize sportsmanship and respect of teammates, opponents, coaches, officials and fans," per the NFL.
Saints' Danny Stutsman handed one of the NFL's biggest fines of the weekend
Saints player Danny Stutsman was slapped with a punishment from the NFL for his actions in the final preseason matchup, along with four other NFL players. He was fined $7,011, which was one of the highest fines. The money raised goes to the Professional Athletes Foundation.
The incident happened in the first quarter of the team's final preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys with 11:47 left on the clock. It took place on the very first play of the game during the Saints' final preseason matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. Stutsman was flagged 15 yards for unnecessary roughness for use of the helmet. The NFL weighed in and decided it was worth extra punishment.
