NFL insider tabs Lions execs as possible GM candidates for dumpster fire team

2 hours ago 1

No matter what happens with the Detroit Lions this season, chances are teams from around the league are going to look to poach coaches and executives from Motown, and Lions assistant general manager, Ray Agnew, and senior personnel executive, John Dorsey, could be two of them.

After previously serving as the director of pro personnel for the Los Angeles Rams from 2017-20 and helping them to a Super Bowl, Agnew was hired as the Lions assistant general manager in 2021. A two-time NFL general manager, Dorsey made several stops before he was hired by the Lions in 2021, also.

Since then, Agnew and Dorsey have had a hand in building arguably the best team in the league, along with general manager Brad Holmes. As a result, both of them should be hot names in general manager searches next offseason, and that's especially true for Agnew.

One job that could be an option for both is the New York Jets' after the team fired Joe Douglas on Tuesday. After news of that decision broke, Agnew and Dorsey were brought up as possible candidates for the job by ESPN's Rich Cimini.

Now that the #Jets GM search is underway, a look at potential candidates (* previous GM experience):

Ray Agnew, Lions, Asst GM
Mike Borgonzi, Chiefs, AGM
Trey Brown, Bengals, Sr. personnel exec
Ian Cunningham, Bears, AGM
Ed Dodds, Colts, AGM
*John Dorsey, Lions, Sr. personnel…

If Agnew or Dorsey were to get hired in New York, they would be stepping into a total mess that will set them up for failure.

We already know about the disaster the Jets are currently in the midst of, but they also have a meddling owner who is making things worse and a soon-to-be 41-year-old quarterback who is underperforming and may or may not be back next year.

More stunning implications from @TheAthletic 🤯🤯🤯

• Johnson unilaterally fired Robert Saleh on Oct. 8 without consulting anyone.

• Johnson blocked Bryce Huff’s extension wishes from Douglas.

• Johnson nixed a Douglas trade offering Lazard and a Day 2 pick for Jerry Jeudy.… https://t.co/VKwPpChE3i

Making matters worse, New York isn't exactly in a great situation salary cap-wise, with the Jets projected to have just $33.8 million to work with next offseason, per Over the Cap.

And, last but not least, they're the freakin' Jets, a team that is routinely one of the most dysfunctional franchises in all of sports, no matter who the head coach and general manager is. Not even a Hall of Famer like Rodgers could overcome that.

The Jets should absolutely be interested in both Lions executives, but after what we've learned about the Jets over the years and through this season, the feeling should not be mutual for Dorsey and/or Agnew.

Granted, new general managers rarely step into a completely ideal situation, but the Jets' situation is simply on another level of terrible.
