NFC East standings: What Commanders' loss to Eagles means for divisional race

2 hours ago 1

Week 11 of the 2024 NFL season kicked off with a huge NFC East matchup between the Commanders and the Eagles on "Thursday Night Football."

Washington came into the game 0.5 games behind Philadelphia with a 7-3 record, while the home team Eagles entered as division leaders at 7-2.

The final score of the game is not indicative of what happened Thursday night. It was largely a snooze-fest for most of the game, and went to halftime 7-3. The score was inflated by Philadelphia scoring 20 points in the fourth quarter for a big divisional win.

Washington not only took the loss, but then doubt about them as a team has already started creeping in. The Commanders came into the season with low expectations with a rookie quarterback and a new head coach. Still, with how good it looked early, Washington looked like it could not only be playoff bound, but could win the NFC East.

They lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 10, but it was a close game. The loss to the Eagles stings more because it was a divisional loss. The Commanders will look to get revenge on their home field in Week 16, but not only is Washington now riding a losing streak, Philly's momentum just keep building and building.

Fly, Eagles, Fly. Philadelphia's winning streak reached six games with Thursday's win, and the team hasn't lost since its early Week 5 bye week.

The Eagles came into Thursday night in the No. 2 spot for the NFC playoff picture and retain that position, behind only the Lions. Even if the Lions loses to the Jaguars this week, Detroit would still retain that top spot heading into Week 12 based on tiebreakers.

Philadelphia will next play Washington in Week 16, but the rematch will be on the road. The Eagles have some big matchups before getting there, though. They will travel across the country to take on the Rams in Week 12, then have a huge game against the Ravens in Week 13.

The Commanders' momentum has disappeared after a narrow loss to the Steelers in Week 10 followed by this divisional loss in Week 11. Washington holds the No. 6 seed in the NFC playoff picture for now, but a Packers win against the Bears this week would drop the Commanders to the No. 7 seed.

Washington will look to rebound next week against rival Dallas. This should be a better matchup on paper for the Commanders, as Cowboys starting quarterback Dak Prescott is out for the remainder of the season due to a hamstring injury.
