The Detroit Tigers still don’t have an answer for Tarik Skubal in the future. Some think it’s smart to trade him, while others believe trying to win this year or re-signing him in the offseason would be the better plan.
As the top left-handed starter in baseball by a wide-margin, Skubal is expected to generate massive interest if he reaches free agency, and most don’t believe Detroit will be able to keep him.
In a recent article, Zachary Rotman of FanSided suggested the Tigers could struggle to compete financially with several big-market teams, including the New York Yankees.
“If the Tigers were unwilling to even entertain the thought of paying Skubal now, how can anyone choose to believe they'll win a bidding war with the likes of the Dodgers, Yankees and Mets in the mix?” Rotman wrote. “It's clear that Skubal is not interested in taking any sort of hometown discount to stay with Detroit based on how he's acted this entire process.”
That harsh truth could put Detroit in a brutal spot if Skubal ultimately reaches the open market, which is all but certain as of now. Big-spending clubs like the Yankees have shown the willingness to outbid teams for elite pitching.
Scott Boras is his agent, so it’ll be interesting to see how big this deal gets.
