The Toronto Blue Jays are doing their homework on a young pitcher with a familiar connection to the New York Yankees. The pitcher is also the biggest young star in the WBC, showing why many MLB teams will want him.
According to Bob Elliott, Toronto scouts have been evaluating high school right-hander Joseph Contreras, the son of former Yankees pitcher Jose Contreras.
“Blue Jays scouts have been evaluating Georgia HSer RHP Joseph Contreras, son of former big leaguer José Contreras (78-67., 4.57 ERA in 11-year career). Joseph will pitch for Brasil as youngest player in WBC.”
For the Blue Jays, evaluating a young pitcher with both international experience and big-league bloodlines makes sense from a scouting perspective. It doesn’t hurt that he has a fastball that’s been up to nearly 100 MPH.
For Yankees fans, though, the report should get them upset if New York isn’t all in on him, too.
If Contreras continues developing the way scouts expect, the son of the former Yankees pitcher could eventually carve out his own path toward professional baseball. Everything right now suggests that he can do so at the highest level.
